Installation

During installation, your antivirus may flag the program as suspicious — let it scan the file and then continue.

If Windows SmartScreen appears when you open the installer, close it, right-click the file → Properties → check Unblock, and run the installer again.

1. First Launch

Sign in: Open My Account and sign in with the credentials from your quizbrothers.app registration:

Quick start guide:

There are two ways to connect players to the quiz. PIN (online server) is the easier option — participants only enter a code in the app. It is not always the most stable option, though: if everyone is on the same WiFi, it usually runs smoothly; if participants connect over mobile data, connection quality can vary.

Option A: Connect via PIN (online server)

1. Main menu → Present → Enable online server.
2. A screen with a PIN for participants appears (on your presentation or monitor).
3. On the phone: Connect via PIN → enter the PIN and team name → Connect.
4. In the program you should see the connected team.

Option B: Connect via local WiFi server

1. Main menu → Settings → Network → set the WiFi network you will play on and save. The default name is QuizBrothers (in a bar you can create the same network — phones are preconfigured for it). At home, set your home network.
2. Main menu → Present → Start local server.
3. Open the mobile app → Settings → enter the same WiFi network name → Save.
4. In the app: Connect via Wi-Fi → enter team name → Connect.
5. In the program you should see the connected team.

Start the quiz:

• Click Send quiz — on the phone two checkmarks appear (Quiz received). Then click Start quiz and the first question appears on the phone.
• Meanwhile, start the presentation — ideally with a second monitor, TV, or projector connected.

Tip: It is a good idea for participants to set a longer screen timeout during the quiz so their displays do not turn off during play.

2. Create Quiz

Click Create quiz, enter a quiz name, and choose one of the seven question types.

2.1 Question Types

Text question — in detail

• Single correct answer — e.g. Capital of Germany? → Berlin
• Multiple correct answers — e.g. Name all African countries starting with M. Add all valid countries to the tolerance list so they can be entered in any order.

Scoring modes for multiple correct answers

• All answers must be correct
• At least N answers must be correct for the team to receive points
• Range — at least N answers must be correct
• Points for each correct answer separately (default)

Closest wins — in detail

• Single winner — only the closest team earns points
• Split points — specified points are divided among the closest teams (e.g. 6 points = 1st place 3 pts, 2nd place 2 pts, 3rd place 1 pt)

2.2 Additional Question Options

Sub-question

For each question you can check Add sub-question, which lets you attach an extra question. Choose whether it should be text or numeric, and enter the correct answer plus accepted variants.

Hint

You can add a hint to a question. During the quiz, the presenter activates it with the Hint button — participants receive help but are penalized with fewer points. Example: the question is worth 3 points, the penalty is 2 points → after activating the hint they can earn only 1 point.

Hide points in app

If you do not want participants to see how many points a question is worth, check Hide points in app. Points will then be hidden in both the presentation and the app.

Tiebreaker

If some teams have the same score at the end of the quiz, you can run a tiebreaker for them. Create a suitable question and check Tiebreaker — it is automatically placed at the very end of the quiz.

Add description

You can add a text description to a question that you want to read or show to participants during the presentation. Display it by pressing the spacebar.

Add image

Drag or select an image in JPG, PNG, WEBP, or similar format. Wait a moment — the image is automatically converted to a size suitable for the app.

3. Quizzes

On this tab you see all quizzes and presentations you have created or imported.

• Import quiz — if you have a downloaded quiz.qbpack file, import it with this button
• Edit quiz — double-click the quiz you want to edit
• Create presentation — when your quiz is ready, the program automatically generates a presentation from its template
• Edit presentation — double-click the presentation to open the built-in presentation editor (see section 5)
• Delete — quizzes and presentations can also be removed from here

4. AI Quiz Authoring

Create and edit QuizBrothers quizzes in natural language through ChatGPT/Codex, Claude, or Gemini in Google Antigravity. The local MCP connection is included directly with the QuizBrothers installer, so you do not need to configure anything complicated or enter any API keys.

4.1 Setup

1. During QuizBrothers installation, leave the AI applications you use selected. All supported integrations are selected by default.
2. It is fine if one of the AI applications is not installed yet. Setup continues without an error and you can add the connection later.
3. After installing or updating QuizBrothers, fully close and reopen ChatGPT/Codex, Claude, or Google Antigravity.
4. Sign in to the chosen AI service with your own account. Features and limits depend on that service and your subscription.

4.2 Example requests

• “Create a new quiz in QuizBrothers called Space and add 10 difficult questions of different types.”
• “Open the Europe quiz and add an ordering question about when countries were founded.”
• “Add a matching question with four pairs, shuffle the matches, and set the correct scoring.”
• “Improve the last question and add an engaging explanation for the live answer reveal.”
• “Generate an image for this question and attach it.”
• “Validate the entire quiz, fix missing correct answers, and save it.”
• “Undo the latest change.”

4.3 Live editing and background creation

When QuizBrothers is running, changes appear directly in the program and AI can open the quiz being edited. When it is closed, AI can safely create or edit a quiz in the background; the result appears the next time you open it. You can also ask AI to launch QuizBrothers, open a named quiz, and save your work.

4.4 Images, explanations, and scoring

Images are never generated automatically. Ask for one explicitly; your AI application must have access to an approved image-generation service or support image creation directly. Question explanations are written to be read aloud during the live reveal. They begin with “Correct answer: …” and continue with a concise, engaging explanation or fact.

If your request or the intended difficulty is ambiguous, AI should ask before choosing the scoring.

4.5 Permissions and troubleshooting

On first use, the AI application may ask you to confirm the local connection. Ordinary quiz operations use narrow permissions; sensitive actions such as closing the program may still require confirmation.

• If AI tries to use PowerShell, Python, or browse folders, tell it: Use the local QuizBrothers MCP connection.
• If the QuizBrothers tools are missing, fully restart the AI application and use the appropriate QuizBrothers connection shortcut from the Start menu.
• If setup reports error 5 while replacing QuizBrothersMCP.exe, close the AI applications and QuizBrothersMCP.exe, then run setup again.
• Always review questions before a live quiz. AI can make factual mistakes, and the quiz author remains responsible for the final content.

4.6 Privacy

The MCP connection works locally with QuizBrothers files. Prompts and quiz content sent to AI are still processed under the selected AI service's terms and privacy settings. QuizBrothers does not operate those services, and an AI account or subscription is not included with the QuizBrothers licence.

5. Presentation Editor & Player

QuizBrothers Pro includes a built-in presentation tool — you do not need PowerPoint or other third-party software to run your quiz on a projector or second monitor. When you click Create presentation on the Quizzes tab, the program builds slides from your quiz (questions, options, images, breaks). Double-click the presentation to open the editor and customize it.

5.1 Presentation Editor

The editor opens on a 16:9 canvas with three areas: slide list on the left, the slide canvas in the center, and a properties panel on the right.

Slides

• Add, duplicate, delete, rename, and reorder slides (drag & drop in the list)
• Set a background image or color per slide
• Optional auto-advance — move to the next slide after a set number of seconds

Elements on a slide

Drag image, video, or audio files directly onto the canvas, or use Add text box in the properties panel. Click an element to select it; drag to move; use handles to resize. Delete removes the selected element.

Animations

Each slide has an animation sequence (similar to PowerPoint). Elements can appear on the first view or after clicks. Use the animation table in the properties panel to reorder steps, add exit/move effects (right-click → Add effect), and set duration.

Toolbar buttons

• Save presentation — saves your changes
• Update presentation — rebuilds slides from the linked quiz while keeping your custom layout where possible
• Run current slide (F6) — preview one slide with animations
• Run presentation (F5) — preview the full presentation
• Presentation settings — global styles for question text, answer options, images, and the default background image

Editor shortcuts

• Ctrl+Z — undo
• Delete / Backspace — remove selected element or animation step
• Ctrl+A — select all elements on the slide
• F5 — run full presentation
• F6 — run current slide only

5.2 Presentation Player

During a live quiz you start the presentation from the Present tab (Start presentation). It runs fullscreen on your projector or second monitor.

Navigation

• Right arrow, Enter, or click — next animation step, or next slide when all steps on the slide are done
• Left arrow — go back one step or slide (stops playing audio first)
• R — restart slide audio
• Semicolon (;) — toggle black screen (hide content during a break or while you speak)
• Esc — close the presentation

During a live quiz

• Question slides show text and images from your quiz; advance with the arrow keys while you read the question aloud
• Transition videos play between slides (configurable in Settings → Presentation)
• Charts generated in QUIZSHOW Scoring are inserted onto slides and displayed automatically when you reach them
• Ranking tables and standings graphics update with live quiz data
• Videos and animated GIFs play on the slide; audio tracks can run in the background

6. Present

This is the most important tab in the program. Buttons marked in green guide you through the steps in the correct order — of course, you can proceed your own way too.

Select the season and location you created in Statistics.

6.1 Local Server (WiFi)

• Make sure Settings has the correct WiFi network that players should connect to.
• Click Start local server — the button turns red and Start presentation lights up.
• Click Start presentation, select your presentation, and it starts automatically. Close it with ESC.
• Wait for participants to connect. They must have the same WiFi network set on their phones.
• Click Send quiz and wait until a green checkmark appears for each team — then Start quiz lights up.
• Advance the presentation to the first question with the right arrow, read the question to participants, and press Num 0 — the quiz starts on phones and the QUIZSHOW window opens.

6.2 Online Server (PIN)

• Click Enable online server and wait — a screen with a PIN for participants appears.
• With Show / Hide PIN you can hide or show the PIN screen at any time. The PIN screen overlays the presentation — after participants connect, choose Hide PIN.
• After starting the server, the button turns red and Start presentation lights up. Click it, select your presentation, and it starts automatically. Close it with ESC.
• The rest of the flow is the same as with the local server — send the quiz, wait for teams to connect, and start the quiz with Num 0.

6.3 Additional Settings

• Reset phones to home screen — if a phone is stuck, this button returns everyone to the “Waiting for quiz” screen
• Clear team list — removes all currently connected participants
• Load saved quiz state — if the program crashed or the power went out, loads the last saved state (the last evaluated question). Data is saved continuously.
• Configure firewall rules — if no participant can connect despite correct settings, run the program as administrator and click this button.
• Set network as private — the program must run on a private network so devices on the network can find it. Run the program as administrator and click this button.
• Remove PowerPoint window — if you prefer your own PowerPoint instead of our presentation, set the presentation to “Presented by an individual (window)”. In QuizBrothers, click Remove PowerPoint window and the presentation fills the full screen. Note: videos and animated GIFs in PowerPoint may not work correctly because PowerPoint loses focus.

7. QUIZSHOW

After you click Start quiz, the QUIZSHOW window opens and the question appears on participants' phones. You see the current question, options, the list of participants and their answers, which are evaluated automatically.

• Up / down arrow keys: move to the next / previous question
• Red indicator next to the question: marks the currently displayed question
• Above the question, the program shows what participants currently see on their phones (question, evaluation, etc.)
• You can follow progress on your own phone too if you connect as !Presenter

7.1 Top-left Icons

• Evaluate question / Next question — the buttons alternate automatically. The one that should be used is always highlighted. We recommend the Num 0 shortcut, which presses them automatically.
• Lightning bolt — instantly resets all phones to the home screen. Use it when you accidentally start the wrong quiz.
• Sync (blue icon) — syncs the current question to all phones. Right-click to choose whether to sync everyone or a specific team.
• Exclamation in triangle — shows disconnect alerts or suspected cheating. Cheating warnings appear as a red bar accompanied by a sound signal.

7.2 Top-right Icons

• Red circle — countdown of a running timer
• 50:50 — lifeline for the selected team. Randomly removes two incorrect options (works only for classic ABCD questions).
• Book icon — shows the description added when creating the question. Can also be activated with the spacebar.
• Stopwatch icon — starts a timer on phones. When time runs out, phones automatically submit the answer (blank or currently selected).

7.3 Cheating Alerts

The mobile app actively protects against cheating: it monitors whether devices are on the correct network, whether something is overlaying the screen, whether split screen is used, or whether the notification bar was pulled down.

7.4 Scoring

After the last question before a break, the Scoring window opens where you can adjust points and generate a chart for the presentation. You can insert the chart on the next slide, two slides ahead, on a specific slide, or the current slide.

• Click Insert Round 1 into PP (for the second round, Insert Round 2 into PP, etc.) — the chart is generated and inserted automatically.
• Close the window and use the right arrow to go to the slide with the chart.
• The BREAK button sends the interim standings table to participants' phones.
• After the break, continue with the right arrow — show the next slide, read the question, and press Num 0.

7.5 Hints During QUIZSHOW

If you set a hint when creating the question, an orange HINT button appears next to it. After pressing it, participants receive the hint and the program counts reduced points according to the configured penalty.

7.6 End of Quiz

After the last question is evaluated, a window with the final standings opens. With the green Send results button you send the current table to phones.

Tiebreaker

If some teams have the same score, click Tiebreaker — the program shows which teams are tied. Steps:

1. Select the tiebreaker question and click the right arrow so the question appears in the presentation first.
2. Read the question to participants and click Start tiebreaker — the question is shown only to tied teams.
3. When participants answer, evaluate the question and run Evaluate quiz.
4. If no one in the standings has the same score, open Scoring, insert the final round into the presentation, and close scoring.
5. Click the right arrow, show the chart, and send the results.

8. Settings

8.1 Timer

Choose one of three modes:

• Uniform time — the same time for all questions (e.g. 2 minutes)
• Different time — set time separately for each question
• Countdown — questions are not time-limited, but you can manually start a countdown (e.g. 15 seconds) when you are waiting only for the last few teams

8.2 Language and Breaks

Here you set the interface language, the number of rounds before a break, and whether to enable tiebreakers on tied scores.

8.3 Scoring

• Appearance settings for charts inserted into the presentation during breaks
• Enable or disable PowerPoint control
• Default size of the question explanation window
• Protection against accidentally pressing Num 0 (so a question is not evaluated before anyone has answered)

8.4 Presentation

Here you can customize your presentation design: default text colors, font size, background, intro slide, transition slide, break video, and more.

8.5 Display

Option to hide answers for the presenter — useful if you want to play at home with friends without seeing the correct answers.

8.6 Network

Set the name of the WiFi network you will compete on. Participants must have the same network name configured on their phones (QuizBrothers by default).

We recommend connecting to the WiFi router via a LAN cable for a stable connection — all participants are connected to you.

For online quizzes, register for free at ngrok.com, copy your Authtoken, paste it into the Ngrok Authtoken field, and PIN-based online quizzes will work immediately.

8.7 Shortcuts

8.8 Organization

Here you set the current season and location where you compete (e.g. 2027, Bar BestBeer).

9. Statistics

In this section you can create a season and location and edit them.

In statistics you see Season standings for your location in the configured season.

You can also view detailed statistics, where you see how many quizzes a team attended, how many first places they won, how many points they scored, their answer success rate, and more.

In team list you can add and remove teams. Teams from this list appear in the app when a user connects to a quiz and clicks Select team. If you have this season and location set on the Present tab, you see the team list you add here. After the first quiz, teams that have already participated appear in this list automatically.

In Quiz list you can view statistics from your individual quizzes.

Season standings use our proven scoring system so large gaps between teams do not appear after just a few quizzes. If you have, for example, 10 teams at one quiz, the first team gets 10 points, the second 9 points, the third 8 points, and so on. This makes it worthwhile for every team to attend your quiz, because they earn at least 1 point toward the overall table just for participating.

10. My Account

In My Account you see your credits and can activate them there. 1 credit unlocks an unlimited number of participants for 24 hours. If you need the program active longer, you can activate multiple credits at once.

After purchasing a credit and adding it to your account you can:

• Upload your teams to the server — participants can then set your venue in their phone profile.
• Uploading season standings shows results to participants in the app under My team (if they have your location set in their profile).
• Send notifications to teams — e.g. a reminder about the next quiz. The limit is 2 notifications per day.

11. Troubleshooting

If the mobile app gets stuck somewhere and a participant cannot continue, restart the app.

• Android — in the main menu press the Recents button (three vertical lines) and swipe the app card away. Then launch the app again and reconnect.
• iOS — swipe up from the bottom-left corner of the display to the center — the app switcher appears. Swipe the app card away. Then launch the app again and reconnect.
